La Tertulia 49 I woke up that day with a mixture of uncertainty and fear as I started to read the news on Twitter. As I read the first tweet, my heart froze and I exclaimed "It cannot be!" A numbing sensation took over my body like a white cloud resembling the news of a loved one that had just died. Fear ran through my veins as the red river districts made this important decision. And sadness invaded my heart as it did in the states that were marked blue that morning. I turned up the television and a sense of relief mixed with disbelief invaded my soul. I thought at least I am not alone. The reporters showed, again and again, faces that mourned and that were filled with dismay. They showed how people from all over our nation filled the streets protesting by using slogans such as #Not My President. Protests spread all over our country. Shock invaded everyone’s mind. The streets of Florida, Chicago, New York, California, Atlanta, Texas, Seattle, Oregon, and Washington DC were flooded by resistance and agitation. Rallies everywhere echoed the voices of thousands of people that screamed “Stop Hate!, No Wall!, Stop Racism!, and Stand Against Bigotry!” People emerged on to the streets and outpoured their feelings on that day.
The world watched and feared for the inevitable ripple effect of this political outcome. And surprisingly, I saw a sense of solidarity that I haven't seen in a long time. I mourned and the world mourned with me. Protests erupted around the world; Europe, the Middle East and Australia demonstrated their solidarity as I watched on TV more rallies and protest piñatas. In Spain’s newspaper, El País, the headline read “United States fears total paralysis.” Gerard Araud, French ambassador to Washington, tweeted “Après Brexit et cette élection, tout eset desormais possible” which translates as “After Brexit and this election, anything is now possible.” The world saw firsthand how the global stock market plunged and how, suddenly, a decision that was taken miles away affected them directly.
